“Rental Cars Are Really Great”

Okay, so the plans have been set for the trip to the Festa dei Ceri. We are definitely going and we are leaving tomorrow. Still studying for my exam in contemporary history, which is scheduled for 11, but according to Dino it will probably take until about 12:30 to get started since our professor is a putz. We are to pick up the car at 3 p.m. and head out from there to Gubbio, which is only about a two-and-a-half hour drive. Details:

MAP.

So, I guess that I should explain why we are driving there: (1) Because it’s easy and (2) because it gives me a chance to quote a song that my Dad wrote:

Rental cars are really great
You can take speedbumps at 108
In those rental cars
Those rental cars…

And so on. But we rented the car from Europecar, which offers good enough deals and we don’t think that we’ll have to present any type of EU citizenship or even an international driver’s license, but we do have an EU citizen with a driver’s license, just in case. The total cost (amongst 5 people—which always brings the cost of anything down to about 5 cents a head) is 198 Euro, not including a refill of gas, which should be about 70 Euro. In total, that’s 54 Euro a person, including the 13 Euro/day insurance on any damages, so we don’t run into any major problems.

And train rides would have cost about 40 Euro a person not counting immense inconvenience, the need to walk about 3km tomorrow night to finally arrive at Dino’s house, and more than likely mishap at one point in the voyage. Anyway, it will be a wonderful trip considering that I will have just finished my exam. Yikes.

The car we will rent is the one featured above. The Fiat Grande Punto.  It is a quite hilarious name, if you ask me.

And after this journey, I will be returning on Saturday to the reception of my lifelong friend Jeffrey Mercado somewhere, at sometime, in Bologna. Can’t wait. And the day I get into Gubbio for the Festa dei Ceri, Erica will be returning from her Safari trip to fly the long 17 hours to New York. I can’t believe it. Anyway, minor studying to do and lots of talk about Franco to come. That should be a true blast. True Blast.

A doppio.
