Tutta la Curva!

So, the Milan-Inter derby was amazing. I’ve never been in a stadium that felt so full of energy/potential for things to be broken or go terribly wrong. Actually, the curva was pretty well-behaved, with the minor exception of the wonderful man who tossed a flare down into the lower levels after the end of the game.

I suppose that I should also mention that Inter lost 2-1. It was a catastrophe, but I did manage to pick up another scarf for the collection, adding up to a grand, whopping total of three (three calcio scarves, one for Berlusconi, which is of another mould entirely). The trip was a little difficult to make so early in the morning after a long night of heated discussion with some random teenagers at Fame Chimica, but everything ran smoothly. That is, except for our friend Ricky who was to meet us at the stadium and, unfortunately, forgot his ticket in Bologna and was unable to finagle entry from the Security. Che tristezza.

The pre-game rowdiness was just about the best part of the experience and was absolutely choc-full of swearing, as was the rest of the game. Overall, it was unreal. And, according to a recent comment on a Times story about Italy, Soccer is right up there with the other popular national pasttimes of sex, opera, and tax evasion. Who knew?

More photos and characters on the way.
